The beetroot in our garden is ready for harvesting so we picked 2 and took them into the playroom to wash (we brought some ants in too so we had to take them back out) and grate. (We tasted some and decided it tasted really good). We put some into today’s bread dough and it made the dough bright pink. Once it was cooked it wasn’t quite as pink as when we pot it in to the oven but you can still see the evidence of the beetroot there. It had an earthy beetroot taste (strangely enough 🤣) but was still quite pleasant. The children definitely preferred their “normal” bread but we will be experimenting more soon!

There was a wee Lassie who Swallowed a Midgie
Today we read the story called There was a Wee Lassie who swallowed a Midgie. We loved reading about the different things the Lassie swallowed to try to catch the Midgie (although we never learned why she swallowed the midgie so squashy and squidgy). We learned the names of two different kinds of birds, a puffin and an eagle. We thought the puffin looked a little like a penguin (that’s another kind of bird) so we compared them and learned that puffins have orange feet and legs and that we couldn’t see the penguins legs at all! Puffins’ beaks are shorter than penguin beaks too. The Lassie swallowed a trout too, that’s a kind of fish and we knew that fish like to swim in the water. The Lassie also swallowed Nessie! Nessie looks like a dinosaur but she swims like the trout.
We printed off pictures of all the things the Lassie swallowed and sorted them then laid them out in the right order.
Hedgerow Harvest
We were very busy at Nursery today! We made a new sign for our garden and then went out for a walk to find some autumn treasures. We found apples, elderberries, hawthorn berries and loads and loads of brambles. We picked some and will try making some jam to eat with our bread. We also spotted some conkers on a conker tree and acorns on an oak tree. So many things to see in our countryside 👍🏻
We’re registered!!
I am delighted to say that, just in the nick of time, we have received word from the Care Inspectorate that our registration has been approved. Our new term starts next Wednesday (August 21st) and we are so pleased to be able to welcome our children to Cambusbarron Village Nursery.

Another visit from Bunny
Our children were delighted to have another visit from Islay the flat coated retriever and her baby Bunny today. Everyone was amazed at how much Bunny has grown in just over 2 weeks. Her eyes are open and they are blue and now she can almost walk but she is still quite wobbly. She even has a little tooth. We took turns to hold her and stroke her very gently and learned that we had to be calm and quiet around her so as not to frighten her.

A house for a mouse and a nest of baby birds
We made a house for a mouse in the woods today but, even though we sat and watched for ages and ages, we didnt see a mouse come to live in it. Maybe next week.
We also found a nest with some eggs and some very new baby birds in it. We think maybe a blue tit laid the eggs because they were white with some brown speckles on them. The birds were very ugly and had no feathers at all. We could see their beaks though and their eyes.
